Labradoodle, Goldendoodle & More: The Rise of Designer Dogs

May 2026·6 min read

Designer dogs — intentional crosses between two purebred dogs — have exploded in popularity over the last two decades. From Labradoodles to Cavapoos to Pomskies, these hybrid breeds are everywhere. But what are they exactly, and are they the best of both worlds or a marketing gimmick?

What Is a Designer Dog?

A designer dog is a deliberate cross between two recognized purebred dogs to achieve a specific combination of traits. This differs from accidental mixed breeds — designer dogs have a predictable parent lineage, even if the resulting puppies vary.

The most popular designer breeds almost all involve a Poodle, because Poodles contribute intelligence, low-shedding coats, and hypoallergenic qualities.

Labradoodle (Labrador + Poodle)

Origin: First bred in Australia in 1989 as a guide dog for a visually impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.

Traits: Friendly, highly energetic, intelligent, and usually low-shedding. Size varies depending on whether the Poodle parent is Standard, Miniature, or Toy.

Reality check: Coat type is not guaranteed. Some Labradoodles shed almost as much as a Lab. Only F2 generations (Doodle × Doodle) start to stabilize coat traits. If allergies are your reason for choosing a Doodle, meet the specific puppy before committing.

Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever + Poodle)

One of the most popular dogs in America. Goldendoodles inherit the gentle, family-friendly temperament of the Golden Retriever and the intelligence and low-shedding of the Poodle. They're excellent family dogs, easy to train, and usually good with children and other pets.

Size: Mini (15–35 lbs), Medium (35–50 lbs), or Standard (50–90 lbs) depending on Poodle parent size.

Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Poodle)

The perfect lapdog cross. Cavapoos are small, gentle, hypoallergenic, and trainable. They're excellent for families with children and adapt well to apartment living. Health note: Cavaliers have known heart issues (mitral valve disease), which Cavapoos can inherit — buy from breeders who health-test their Cavalier parent.

Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel + Poodle)

One of the oldest designer breeds, dating back to the 1960s. Cockapoos are joyful, adaptable, and low-shedding. They vary significantly in size. They're prone to ear infections (inherited from both parent breeds) and need regular ear cleaning.

Pomsky (Pomeranian + Husky)

Bred for their "cute puppy" appearance. Pomskies are beautiful dogs with bright blue eyes and wolf-like markings, but they can be unpredictable in temperament — ranging from mellow Pomeranian-like dogs to highly strung mini-Huskies. Size also varies widely. Research breeders carefully.

Bernedoodle (Bernese Mountain Dog + Poodle)

A newer designer breed that combines the gentle, calm nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with Poodle intelligence and low-shedding. They're loving, loyal, and great with families. Standard Bernedoodles can be large (70–90 lbs). Mini versions are available.

The Honest Truth About Designer Dogs

The good: Many designer dogs genuinely do combine the best traits of both parents. First-generation (F1) crosses often benefit from hybrid vigor and have fewer inherited diseases than either parent breed.

The reality: First-generation crosses have variable traits. Two puppies from the same litter can look and behave quite differently. Breeders who charge premium prices for "F1b" or "multi-gen" Doodles are selling more consistency, but also more inbreeding.

The concern: The designer dog market has enabled irresponsible breeding. Always visit the breeder, meet both parents if possible, and ask for health test results. Many wonderful Doodles are also available in shelters and rescues.
